Here we go again.
Brett Favre will sign a two-year deal with the Vikings after previously telling the team he would stay retired. The second year ofthe deal is believed to be a team option.
Head coach Brad Childress met Favre upon his arrival at the team's facility and reportedly has told the team that Favre will start the team's next preseason game on Friday against the Chiefs.
Dozens of fans who no doubt heard reports of Favre and his wife,Deanna, boarding a Minnesota-bound plane with the Vikings logo on itshowed up at the facility and cheered the new QB as he pulled up.
The deal is contingent on Favre passing a physical, but there arenot expected to be any hitches, despite reports that Favre has a smalltear of his rotator cuff, the group of muscles that stabilize the shoulder, which was discovered in a recent examination from Dr. JamesAndrews. It was Andrews who repaired Favre's torn biceps in May — aninjury Favre played with the final five games of last season.
PFW learned from sources last month that the team was offering aone-year contract worth about $12 million. Reports have surfaced that the contract would be around $10 million to $12 million for the firstyear.
Last month, Favre declined the Vikings' invitation to attend camp, saying he wasn't sure he could hold up to the rigors of a full season. He had felt pain in both ankles and his left knee as he worked out at alocal high school near his home in Hattiesburg, Miss. and worried abouthis surgically repaired shoulder. But it was clear in select interviews Favre did afterward that he hadn't closed the door 100 percent toreturning.
Since Favre gave his initial answer of no, the Vikings have watchedTarvaris Jackson and Sage Rosenfels battle for the starting job. Jackson had the initial edge before suffering a knee sprain, but Rosenfels responded with a solid effort in the team's first preseason game against the Colts.
No matter, Favre is expected to earn the starting job upon arriving. He has played in a West Coast system similar to the one that Childress and offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell, who coached Favre in Green Bay, run with the Vikings.
